Jewelry Collection Doubles As Mosquito Repellant - PSFK (subscription)
Guard yourself against the dengue and Zika viruses with necklaces and bracelets accessorized with citronella beads
Just in time to help combat the Zika outbreak in Singapore, By Invite Only’s latest jade collection, Yu Ahn, shields any user from mosquitoes that carry the dengue and Zika viruses.
The Singaporean collection includes necklaces and bracelets. Their chains are made from Onyx and Rhodium plates, while the stones are made of Burmese jade. Each Yu Ahn design has three citronella beads that come with it.
Jade is a Chinese symbol of protection. It is believed to protect the wearer from evil and bad luck. In this case, the evil happens to be virus-carrying mosquitoes. On the other hand, citronella is a non-toxic oil known for its mosquito-repelling quality. It is very effective against the Aedes aegypti mosquito, the creature that carries both the Zika and dengue viruses.
The jade and citronella make for the perfect combination for this potentially life-saving accessory. There’s no need to bring mosquito repellant along on the next picnic or camping trip; just wear a Yu Ahn necklace and you’re protected while looking exquisite.
Trixie Khong, founder of By Invite Only, shared how she hopes to combat mosquito-borne diseases in her country. She told Mashable:
“We realized that people don’t want to bring around mosquito repellent all the time, even though mosquito-borne diseases are a problem in Singapore. So as a jewelry designer, we decided to combine the concept of safety with fashion.”
The collection debuted at the end of July and has proven to be exceptionally popular. The Yu Ahn Square Bracelet, Yu Ahn Drop Pendant Necklace and Yu Ahn Classic Bead Bracelet are all sold out, while the Yu Ahn Cluster Necklace is still available for sale.
