Thieves snatch nearly $1M in jewelry from upscale Houston store - UPI.com
HOUSTON, Sept. 16 (UPI) -- A smash-and-grab heist of expensive jewelry in Houston may be an example of a nationwide gang of thieves, police said.
Four men dressed in black entered the de Boulle Diamond and Jewelry store in Houston's upscale River Oaks area Tuesday. They smashed display cases with hammers to collect diamond rings and other high-value jewelry as employees and customers stood by. The men escaped to a waiting car within 40 seconds.
Jewelry valued at nearly $900,000 was taken, investigators said. The incident was caught on the store's video surveillance cameras.
"It appears it was very, very well organized. It wasn't just a random type thing. It's very scary. Very scary for those in the jewelry industry here in town or pretty much anywhere in the country," Stephen Silver of Jewelry Appraisal Services told KPRC-TV, Houston.
