From naturalistic to retro, when it comes to red-carpet jewels for the Emmys and beyond, the bigger the better.
There was no shortage of high-wattage glamour on the red carpet over the summer, with actresses like Charlize Theron, Julia Roberts and Jessica Chastain dripping in diamonds at Cannes to pops of brilliant color from Margot Robbie’s gobsmacking Tiffany and Co. pink diamond ring at the Legend of Tarzan premiere, to Beyoncé’s Lorraine Schwartz $1.8 million Colombian emerald earrings at the MTV Video Music Awards.
Looking toward awards show season starting with the Emmys, subtlety once again takes a backseat. Think maximalist pieces in rich jewel tones, including dramatic, eye-catching earrings, chokers and rings. Here are three jewelry designers to watch who are turning heads with statement pieces that are all about making an entrance.
Sarah Hendler, Los Angeles
The Modern-Retronaut: Hendler, who launched her jewelry line after helping restaurateur husband Vinny Dotolo open Animal, Son of a Gun and Trois Mec, focuses on sophisticated handcrafted pieces that combine details inspired by family heirlooms from the Victorian era to the '70s with a modern edge, such sapphire-dotted starburst cocktail rings and spear-drop earrings with hand-painted enamel details.
Who’s Wearing: Olivia Wilde, Kiernan Shipka, Busy Phillips, Mandy Moore.
Key Pieces: Rubellite Spear Drop “Shirley” Earrings, Sapphire “Stellar” Ball Ring.
“I always want to see more color on the red carpet. It’s a risk that always pays off. There is something to be said about a pop of color or a bold jewel that helps a woman stand out and be vibrant.”
Ara Vartanian, São Paulo
The Innovator: Each of Brazilian jeweler Vartanian’s bold pieces are one-of-a-kind created around rare stones with exquisite modern geometric shapes.
Who’s Wearing: Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Penelope Cruz, Anne Hathaway
Key Pieces: Opal Hook Earrings, Inverted Black Diamond Three Finger Ring.
“I frequently find myself bringing two opposite forces together: I take a citrus diamond, which has an edge and toughness and pair that with a smooth opal. It’s like having the Big Bad Wolf and Red Riding Hood all in the same piece.”
Daniela Villegas, Los Angeles
The Naturalist: Villegas looks to the natural world to inspire her jewelry, with luxurious metals and colorful stones mixing to create delicate, organic pieces featuring beetles, feathers, porcupine quills and other organic elements.
Who’s Wearing: Salma Hayek, Demi Moore, Willa Holland, Julianne Hoff.
Key Pieces: The Circle of Life Necklace, Xochiquetzal Ring.
“Jewelry must take you into a dream. I like movement, color, playfulness — big, bold bracelets, long and impressive earrings, lots of rings to create a ‘ring party.’”
