ENDWELL, N.Y.
An award-winning jewelry designer who is featured in a documentary film tracing the journey of a gem stone is in our area.
Mark Schneider of Long Beach, California was at Conti Jewelers in Endwell today to meet with customers and take special orders.
His specialty is creating custom rings, pendants and earrings using either new stones or estate pieces already owned by his clients.
Schneider participated in the documentary, "Sharing the Stone" which tracks the mining of a rare green garnet in Africa and then follows it through the cutting and designing phases.
Schneider says the film demonstrates a socially responsible approach to sourcing gem stones.
"In the jewelry industry, we're very interested in preserving the environment, like everyone is. We're also interested in the conditions in these countries, and the amount of people that are in this industry making a living. In some cases, this is the only work that is available to them is the mining of these stones," said Schneider.
The film, along with Schneider and director Orin Mazzoni, will appear at the Tiahwaga Theater in Owego this evening at 7 p.m.
Schneider will be back at Conti Jewelers to meet with customers Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
