Home Local Thieves Steal $400k In Jewelry From San Francisco Jeweler - San Francisco News (registration)

SAN FRANCISCO—Authorities are searching for the thieves who stole over $400,000 worth of merchandise from a San Francisco jewelry dealer on Thursday, December 29.

The heist occurred in the North Mission District around 6:30 p.m. near the front door of the Jewelry Center, located on Utah Street, near Highway 101.

The victim, a 30-year-old man, was robbed by at least three men, authorities said. According to a family member, the jewels were not insured.

“They probably waited for him to go in, watched him, and when he came out, they ran out and jumped him,” said the victim’s cousin, David Makaran to NBC Bay Area News.

“There’s no tracking on a diamond or gold items,” Makaran said. “Some people might pawn it off for maybe 10 percent of the value, so they might get $30,000 to $40,000 for it.”

Makaran said his cousin was hit in the chest, and his small suitcase full of diamonds and gold was gone.

The Jewelry Center security guard said he saw three men jumping the victim on one of his security cameras, but by the time he saw the attack, it was too late to press the silent alarm.

“Most people in this business don’t carry protection on them,” the security guard informed NBC Bay Area News. “They should at least use pepper spray.”

The San Francisco Police Department are investigating the case.
