LIBERTY

Phyllis Perlman seemed happy to forsake the white to make a little silver.

“This is all silver with pearls,” Perlman said, referring to a bracelet she assiduously made during Sunday afternoon’s Jewelry Making 101 gathering at Temple El Emeth, 3970 Logan Way.

Perlman was happy to be in the warmth of the 43-year-old Jewish synagogue and temporarily away from the periodic bursts of snow while among the 14 or 15 participants who tried their hands at making bracelets during the two-hour class. She also serves as Temple El Emeth’s co-vice president of programming.

Conducting the fun-filled class was Lori Szoke, a 17-year art teacher at Boardman Center Intermediate School, who provided instruction and tips on the intricacies of bracelet making.

“They’re strung on elastic cords … and the beads are done in a decorative way,” said Szoke, who also owns a business called Best Kept Secret Jewelry and sells some of her merchandise at craft shows.

“It’s [also] something fun to do on a cold winter day,” she said.

Participants sat at a long table as they carefully and diligently put their imaginations and creativity to work.

Louise Kline of Warren, who has been a Temple El Emeth member for a few years, opted for a bracelet punctuated by black and silver pearls as well as other pieces of varying sizes.

They included everything from an elliptically shaped pearl, along with ones shaped like a drum, a marble and an array of other sizes, shapes and colors.

Kline said she enjoys making earrings as a hobby, but thought she also would like to expand her talents to include bracelets.

Also joining in the festivities while temporarily escaping from the cold, wind and snow was Elyse Silverman, the temple’s program director.

She came up with a turquoise multi-stone pattern that also consisted of a dash of glitz complemented with silver beads.

“I made it myself,” she said proudly.
