A crook with a bad eye for quality stole about two dozen rings from a locally owned jewelry store.
Items taken during the overnight smash-and-grab burglary included a display of rings on display close to the door of Gillis Jewelers.
What the burglar didn't know is the smashed glass door likely cost more than the jewelry. The stolen rings were sample engagement rings, worth only about $20 to $25 each, said jeweler Skye Gillis, whose father John Gillis founded the store in 1980.
Sample rings are often made of cubic zirconia and unhallmarked metals with no special finishes.
The sample rings were from the store's "Romance" bridal line.
Gillis said the glass door would be repaired soon, and they would be be open for business as usual at 9:30 a.m.
The store, which sells, designs and repairs jewelry, is in the Kipling Place shopping center on McFarland Boulevard.
The Tuscaloosa Police Department is investigating the break-in.
