Gilded Age fashion? Flagler Museum in Palm Beach holding jewelry sale - Palm Beach Daily News

The Flagler Museum in Palm Beach is known for its items from the Gilded Age, and for a discounted price, shoppers can take home a piece of it. Until Labor Day weekend, the museum’s store is offering a jewelry sale of 20 percent off selected items.

Some of the pieces on sale include earrings made from antique bronze molds of ornaments, or ormolu, from the 1880s to 1920s. Creator Valerie Peyton Horn used to collect ormolu throughout flea markets in Paris, later using the pieces to craft a jewelry line. For instance, her $195 bee and dragonfly earrings have removable studs that can be interchanged with other gems or diamonds.

The store also offers pieces by French jewelry designer Lorina Balteanu, whose collection resembles the museum’s current lace exhibit. To create her pieces, Balteanu uses an 18th-century technique called tatting lace, known for its intricate patterns, while mixing the designs with glass pearls and semi precious stones. This is seen in the Augustina $450 necklace and $150 earring matching set, which has Swarovski pearls, beads and gemstones. Each piece is handcrafted in either France or Italy, including the $695 black lace necklace made with silk, metalized polyester, Swarovski pearls, zircon and quartz.

Visit the museum’s visitor kiosk for a “store only access” pass to shop these pieces on discount.

Tropical and chic — From collaborating with Carolina Herrera to hosting events during Fashion WeekMercedes Salazar has been taking over the accessory world with her tropical-chic handmade pieces. In 2007, the jewelry designer began working with indigenous and artisan communities from her native country, Colombia, who use ancestral weaving techniques with materials including straw and iraca and werregue palm.

Today, her accessories are worn by big names including actresses Sofia Vergara and Naomie Harris and singer Katy Perry.

Most are attracted to the unique, exotic look that blends raw materials with crystals, metals and acrylic in fun designs inspired by the wildlife and nature in Colombia. Earrings take the shape of birds, wasps, fruits, palm trees and even constellations.

The Green Páramo Leaf earrings are inspired by the Páramo of Guacheneque, a Colombian nature reservoir with a large variety of flora and fauna. Other plants seen in the collection include earrings resembling monstera  and alocasia with hues of pink and green. Salazar also uses various birds in her designs, including parakeets, toucans and guacamayas embellished with crystals and acrylic flowers.

Similar designs are also available in handbags and can be found at mercedessalazar.com.
