Thousands of dollars of jewelry stolen in smash-and-grab robbery - Southgate News Herald

Thousands of dollars worth of jewelry was stolen in a smash-and-grab robbery at Kohl’s near Southland Center on Aug. 11.

At about 8:30 p.m., Taylor officers were dispatched to the department store and advised that two black males in construction vests had smashed a jewelry case with a hammer, grabbed several items and fled.

Ninety minutes earlier, one of the men had come to the counter and inquired about diamond engagement rings. The salesperson showed him a couple of rings valued at between $4,000 and $8,000 before the man left.

Less than two hours later, he returned.

While counting down the cash register, the salesperson heard a loud noise and turned to see two men, one of whom was the man she’d helped earlier.

The men proceeded to shatter the case with a hammer, grab several diamond rings and necklaces, then run out of the store.

Surveillance footage showed the men leaving in a silver sedan, possibly an early 2000 model Buick Century.

An incident report from the Taylor Police Department describes the two suspects.

One man is described as black, about 25 to 35 years old, with a thin build and a clean-shaven face except for a thin mustache. He wore black athletic pants with white stripes down the legs, a shirt with red writing, a yellow/orange construction vest and a blue Detroit Tigers hat.

The second man is described as black, about 5 feet 10 inches tall. He wore a black Detroit Tigers cap, black basketball shorts with a blue and white stripe, a black hooded sweatshirt, black and yellow shoes, a yellow/orange construction vest and a gray bandana over his face.

Anybody with information on the case should contact Detective Steve Porta at 734-287-6611, ext. 2032.
