A 17-year-old boy who was shot during a jewelry store robbery died last week, according to his family's lawyer.
Jakeem McMillan, of Pompano Beach, walked into Treasure Coast Jewelry on Dec. 13. and tried on several gold rings. The woman working the counter told McMillan he was not allowed to try on all the rings at the same time. According to the arrest report, the teen threatened to kill the owner of the store before he dashed out the door with $800 worth of jewelry.
Deputies said a store employee tried to stop him, but the fleeing suspect pushed him away and hopped into a waiting Jeep driven by 16-year-old John Clarke. Michael Dacey, a co-owner of the store, saw the confrontation, pulled out a gun and fired at the fleeing Jeep, hitting McMillan in the head. The fleeing Jeep then crashed into a dump truck. Deputies captured the 16-year-old driver, identified as John Clark, after a brief manhunt.
McMillan was taken to the hospital, where he died on Dec. 19.
Clark was charged with robbery and grand theft auto. Sheriff William Snyder said on the day of the robbery that if McMillian died, Clark could be charged with murder.
