ST. CLAIR COUNTY, MI – Four suspects are in custody following a robbery Tuesday night at the Birchwood Mall in Fort Gratiot Township.
Deputies with the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office responded shortly before 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 9 to the mall, 4350 24th Ave., regarding a robbery that’d taken place at the Kay Jewelers store.
As police were on their way to the mall, St. Clair County Central Dispatch informed deputies the suspects had run out of the mall and got into a red Chevrolet Impala.
The suspects left the mall at a high rate of speed south on 24th Avenue, police said.
Deputies began to search for the vehicle with assistance from officers with the Port Huron Police Department and Michigan State Police troopers.
A Port Huron police unit located the vehicle in the area of Gratiot Avenue and Hancock in the city.
The suspects refused to stop and a short chase ensued, police said. The vehicle eventually stopped in the area of Riverside Drive and Interstate 94.
Three suspects got out of the vehicle and fled on foot. Two of the suspects on foot were captured almost immediately, with the third suspect caught a short time later. A fourth suspect remained in the vehicle.
All four suspects were in custody within 20 minutes of the original call, police said.
Detectives with the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office went to Kay Jewelers where they were told three of the suspects came into the store, smashed a glass jewelry counter, grabbed an unknown amount of merchandise, and ran out in a matter of seconds.
Additional witnesses told detectives the three suspects had jumped into a red vehicle, where a driver was waiting for them, police said.
The suspects are three 17-year-old males and one 19-year-old male, all from Detroit.
They are currently being held at the St. Clair County Intervention and Detention Center awaiting arraignment on robbery and other charges.
