Jewelry store broken into in Watsonville, second time in past year - KSBW Monterey
A Watsonville jewelry store was broken into early Thursday morning. Surveillance footage shows a man throwing a rock through the front door of Fatima's Fine Jewelry around 4:15 a.m. before breaking display cases and grabbing items.Store owner Fatima Carlos Vaca said the burglar spent a total of about one minute and 20 seconds inside the store grabbing a total of seven trays of silver jewelry.She and her husband spent all morning cleaning up the broken glass that was left behind."There's glass everywhere. Including in my eye right now," Fatima said.Fatima said she started selling jewelry door-to-door 24 years ago. She slowly grew her business and was finally able to build her own place downtown. She said she was hoping the move would provide the business more stability and security, but she said she's having doubts now that this is the second time her business has been burglarized in the past year."This is pretty much our life-savings," Fatima said. "Being so close (to the police department) you would expect to feel safe, and you would expect your business to feel safe but obviously not."After the initial thief ran out, a couple of other people who walked past the store also stole items. Fatima said Watsonville police arrived about 20 minutes after her security system notified herself and dispatch.Fatima said she'd like to see the city invest more resources to keep business owners safe, the same way business owners have invested in the city."Yes definitely. We need more people (police officers) on," Fatima said. "We need to feel more protected, the surveillance needs to be better. There's only so much we can do as business owners but we need help.
