Car slams into jewelry store in Monroeville, driver arrested - WTAE Pittsburgh
A car crashed through the front door of a jewelry store in Monroeville and the driver was taken into custody Friday evening. Surveillance cameras outside of James Douglas Jewelers captured the dark colored sedan smashing into the front of the building and then backing up. We saw a car stuck in the front of the building," said James Fearer, owner of James Douglas Jewelers. "My first concern is that this happened at other jewelry stores. We thought maybe he was trying to rob us, but he never entered the building. We just assumed it was an accident and police would handle it." The man walked around his vehicle several times, even rummaging through the passenger side door. At one point he threw something away in a trashcan before getting back into his car and backing up. Monroeville police had already arrived at the scene. "Thank goodness this didn't happen during business hours. There's two chairs that sit there that people rest (in) while we're working on their watches and someone could have been really hurt," Fearer said. At the scene, bricks and broken glass are scattered across the floor and the front window is boarded up. The store owner said that despite the mess, he was still able to open the store Saturday. "I'd just like to thank Monroeville. The police were phenomenal. All this boarding up, you know, we wanted to make sure the building was secure and the Monroeville Public Works was here, Johnny on the spot and took care of it, so I'm very thankful for my community," Fearer said. The owner said crews will be at the store Monday to make repairs to the building, but he said it is safe and secure for his customers. The driver has not yet been identified.
