Hagerstown woman who skipped sentencing in jewelry theft jailed - Herald-Mail Media

A  woman who failed to show up in May for sentencing on a charge of stealing thousands of dollars in jewelry is behind bars.

Shauneca Moody, 29, of Lakeside Drive, Hagerstown, pleaded guilty in April to theft of $1,500 to $25,000 in the 2018 case. Two charges, theft of $25,000 to $100,000 and fourth-degree burglary, were placed in the inactive docket at the time.

Moody was scheduled for sentencing on May 30 but failed to appear in Washington County District Court, according to court records. An arrest warrant issued at that time was served on Monday.

On April 25, 2018, a county Sheriff's Office deputy went to the Lakeside Drive home of Moody's next-door neighbor, the charging document said. The woman told the deputy she was sleeping that morning when she heard a noise in the kitchen.

The woman went to the kitchen and found Moody, who told her the woman's mother had given her permission to come inside to look for a pair of pink slippers she had left behind the previous day, the document said.

When the woman's mother returned to the house, she found about 150 pieces of jewelry were missing, the document said. It also appeared a spare house key was missing. The mother told the deputy she previously showed Moody her jewelry collection.

A deputy checked a pawn shop database and found Moody had done transactions at two Hagerstown-area shops, according to the charging document. Investigators determined Moody had sold jewelry suspected to have been stolen from the victim between October 2017 through two days after the jewelry theft was reported.

More than $7,000 of the stolen jewelry belonging to the two women was recovered by police, the document said. That left $36,100 in jewelry unaccounted for the document said.

District Judge Mark D. Thomas set a cash bond of $10,000 for Moody.
