Ladies, Clutch Those Pearls! Men’s Jewelry Is Going Baroque - Vogue
Jewelry traditionally plays a quiet role in men’s fashion. A handsome watch or a sleek silver bracelet can accentuate a look while going almost unnoticed. But in recent years male models and celebrities have been seen wearing much more striking jewelry, such as Baroque-style earrings, pearl necklaces, ornate brooches, and diamonds (which are no longer only a girl’s best friend).
On the red carpet the trend first gained momentum on male rappers such as Gucci Mane, Swae Lee, and A$AP Rocky; they’ve all regularly layered pearl or crystal necklaces with complete confidence. At this year’s Met Gala, Harry Styles caused a stir when he wore a single delicate pearl earring, as though he were the subject of a Johannes Vermeer painting. Risk-takers such as Ezra Miller have pushed the look even further; he opted for full-on chandelier earrings that could have been plucked from some chic grandma’s jewelry box.
Meanwhile, on the runways, Celine showed dangly earrings for him; Dior Homme added intricate brooches to sharp suiting; and Ryan Roche had her models sporting pearl necklaces. Gucci even sent out one model wearing a full-on tiara—the same headpiece that singer Troye Sivan wore in an Instagram selfie last month.
