$100000 worth of jewelry believed stolen - St. Augustine Record
More than $100,000 worth of jewelry is believed to have been stolen from an elderly couple’s home while they were dining out on the evening of Sept. 10.
A St. Johns County Sheriff’s deputy responded to the home in the 1000 block of Inverness Drive around 10 p.m. after the couple — both in their 70s — called authorities saying their home had been burglarized.
According to a report from the incident, the couple told the deputy they had gone to dinner shortly before 6 p.m. They returned home about 9:30 p.m. and found their front and back doors open. They told the deputy they checked their home and found a pillow case missing from their bed and then noticed a number of jewelry boxes were missing.
The woman initially estimated about 50 pieces of jewelry, valued over $200,000 total, were missing. Because of her “excited state,” the deputy left affidavits behind so she could take her time and fill them out in detail, the report said.
Two days later, the woman submitted the affidavits along with photographs and an itemized list of 36 missing items. She said at that time she estimated the total value of the missing pieces was in excess of $100,000.
The couple was unable to provide any suspect information or leads, but did say they have had a number of contractors to their home in the past year.
