Jewelry auction should 'ring' up bids - Valdosta Daily Times

VALDOSTA — Betty Braun moved to the Valdosta area in 1996 to be closer to her son and his family.

She was born Betty Porvin in Detroit, the daughter of a family that owned several hotels and motels. The family moved to Miami. She married her husband, Moses Braun. They had a son Barry.

Betty Braun passed away two years ago at the age of 93. She loved playing golf with the ladies group at Stone Creek. She was an avid card player, primarily bridge and mahjong.

She ordered items from the Home Shopping Network.

Lots of jewelry, said Norma Cloud of Professional Auctioneers.

An open house is scheduled this weekend for the estate of Betty Braun.

Cloud estimates there are approximately 600 silver and gold rings, primarily 550 sterling-silver rings.

“The majority were new and I had to remove them from their packaging,” Cloud said.

Cloud created so many lots of jewelry that she ran out of cases.

So many necklaces, especially freshwater pearls, that they are included in each lot case. Cloud has to hang several necklaces as separate lots.

Rough estimate: About 3,500 pieces of jewelry.

She roughly estimates the Braun jewelry collection at $75,000-plus, “but the lots are affordable. With Christmas coming, there are a lot of great gift ideas.”

In addition to jewelry, the estate has several pieces of crystal, vintage designer evening dresses, silk neck ties and several pieces of art.

One artwork is an 1877 painting by British artist Joseph Clark. In the past, a Clark painting sold for more than $58,000 at auction. Cloud estimates the value of the 1877 painting between $5,000-$10,000.

The painting may be the crown jewel of the auction, but Cloud said she believes the jewelry will attract the most attention.

The open house is scheduled for 2-5 p.m. Sunday, 4418 Mathis Mill Road in Stone Creek.

The online auction is scheduled to liquidate the contents of the house the first day with bidding closing at 7:30 p.m. Monday; jewelry, furs and clothing are scheduled for the second day with bidding ending 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Visit http://ift.tt/2crA3J8.
