CLEVELAND, Ohio — The suspects driving a van that crashed with a police car on Cleveland's West Side Thursday night had just robbed a Strongsville jewelry store, police said.
A Strongsville police cruiser collided with a U-Haul van at the corner of Lorain Avenue and West 41st Street in Cleveland's Ohio City neighborhood around 9 p.m.
Two suspects jumped out of the van and ran away.
Quaminique Macklin, of Detroit, was arrested and charged with felony theft, burglary and fleeing and eluding, according to police.
Strongsville police responded to a report of a robbery at Sheiban Jewelers in the 16000 block of Pearl Road at 7:47 p.m. A man was smashing a jewelry case and stealing several watches, police said.
Officers tried to stop the van in Strongsville in connection with the robbery and the vehicle fled, according to a Strongsville Police Department news release.
Witnesses at the scene of the crash told a cleveland.com reporter that the van was traveling 100 miles per hour and the police car hit the van to stop it. The impact of the crash knocked down a tree.
Cleveland police reported minor injuries from the crash. Cleveland police officers were not involved in the chase.
