Theft at jewelry store is under investigation - Grand Junction Daily Sentinel

Theft at jewelry store is under investigation

Police are investigating a jewelry theft that was reported this week, when two people entered a local shop and stole gold jewelry using sleight-of-hand techniques.

According to the Grand Junction Police Department, officers responded to Thomas Hunn Jewelers at 112 N. Third St. shortly before 11:30 a.m. on Sept. 14.

Hunn Jewelers shared security video footage on its Facebook page, asking anyone who knows these subjects to call police.

The video clip shows three store employees behind the counter, with two customers in the foreground — a man and a woman.

In the video, the woman appears to be removing and putting items in a bag on the counter, and the man distracts one of the workers at the counter.

In a split second, the woman’s left hand drops below the counter, presumably concealing the items that were stolen. The jewelry’s estimated value is about $12,000, according to police reports.

Police spokeswoman Heidi Davidson said the case is still under investigation and no arrests have been made.

There are two suspects in the case: a woman in her 50s, about 5 feet tall, with gold teeth and long brown hair, with a black -and-white patterned shirt and a skirt with horizontal stripes who was wearing a baseball cap; and a man in his 20s, about 5 feet 5 inches tall, with black hair and blond highlights.

Police took another theft report from a business in the downtown area earlier in the week, also involving multiple suspects.

According to police records, three suspects entered A Robin’s Nest of Antiques & Treasures at 602 Main St. and took items from the shop. That case is also still under investigation, and it is not known whether the reports are related.
