Erie police hunting for suspect in jewelry store heist - GoErie.com

Erie police are reviewing surveillance video and searching for other evidence in an attempt to identify a man accused of stealing 71 rings from a downtown jewelry store late Tuesday afternoon.

The 71 diamond rings and wedding bands, valued at $28,000 to $30,000, were stolen from Ralph Miller Jewelers & Gallery, 28 W. Eighth St., in a theft that was reported to city police at about 5:15 p.m. on Tuesday when employees were getting ready to close the business, Erie police Capt. Rick Lorah said Wednesday.

According to investigators, the suspect had gone to the store last week and was showing interest in purchasing some jewelry. He later returned to the store and brought in a watch to have repaired, Lorah said. The man watched where a store employee got display case keys from, and at one point he grabbed the keys and used them to open the case and take the rings, he said.

The suspect was described as a black male in his 40s or 50s who was about 5 feet, 8 inches tall and about 220 pounds. He was unshaven and had a stocky build, according to police.

Anyone with information is asked to call Erie police Detective Roberta Raszkowski at 870-1152.
