GARY — The Miller community on Monday was mourning the loss of a 43-year-old artist and mother found dead Saturday in an apparent murder-suicide in the city's Miller section.

Officers found Leila Edwards and her husband, Michael Watkins, dead in a home in the 7200 block of East First Avenue after meeting one of her family members there to check on her welfare, police said.

Edwards died from gunshot wounds, and her death was ruled a homicide, according to the Lake County coroner's office.

Watkins' wounds appeared to be self-inflicted, according to a release from the Gary Police Department.

Edwards, a jewelry maker and artist, operated Wonderland Stained Glass at 900 N. Shelby St. Next door, the family — including her son — worked at Ben's Bodacious BBQ, Bakery & Deli.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Sgt. Jeremy Ogden at 219-755-3855 or the Crime tip Line at 866-Crime-CP.

The couple's son was not hurt in the shooting Saturday, police said.
