SPARTA -- An Elmwood Park man is facing burglary and theft charges after police say he allegedly broke into a Sparta residence in July while they were on vacation and stole from them.
Joseph Mauriello, 30, was charged with third-degree burglary and third-degree theft of moveable property.
On July 13, the homeowners of a Sparta residence arrived home from vacation and immediately observed that their bedroom had been ransacked and jewelry had been taken, according to the Sparta Police.
After processing the scene and following up on leads, it was determined that a white male -- who police identified as Mauriello -- had sold some of the stolen jewelry to a cash-for-gold shop in Clifton, police said.
On Sept. 11, a Sparta police detective learned that Mauriello was lodged in the Morris County Correction Facility on charges related to a burglary out of Harding.
Criminal charges have been prepared for Mauriello who has been advised of a mandatory court appearance.
