Jewelry store robbed at gunpoint - Morganton News Herald
Police are looking for two men who robbed a Morganton jewelry store on Saturday.
Two men dressed in dark clothing entered Kay Jewelers on Morganton Heights Boulevard around 11:15 a.m. and stole multiple pieces of jewelry, Morganton Department of Public Safety Capt. Trent DeVinney said.
One person had a handgun and demanded that employees stand against a wall. A hammer was used to bust multiple display cases, and jewelry was put into a bag, DeVinney said.
The men got inside a black Honda Civic and left the scene, DeVinney said. The men were in and out of the store in just a couple minutes.
Police later found the car abandoned and without a license plate on Henredon Road, DeVinney said.
Kay Jewelers still is in the process of checking their inventory to get an exact dollar amount of what was stolen, DeVinney said.
The robbery happened less than two weeks after five people broke into Gregory Jewelers in downtown Morganton.
“I don’t think there’s any real concerns about more (jewelry store robberies),” DeVinney said. “Traditionally, robberies at jewelry stores like that are rare.”
However, DeVinney said that multiple Kay Jewelers in North Carolina have been broken into, including stores in Albemarle and in Burlington.
“As far as the reason why it has happened so often at this time, I don’t really know” DeVinney said. “I mean, they are an inviting target with expensive items.”
The police report does not state whether or not customers were inside during the robbery, but no one was injured, DeVinney said.
DeVinney said officers will be looking into who the Honda Civic belongs to and attempting to identify the suspects. However, both men were wearing bandanas across their faces.
The store was closed Monday, and a sign on the front door stated that it would be closed until further notice.
