14 firefighters injured in 3-alarm chemical fire at Cranston jewelry manufacturer - Turn to 10
A three-alarm chemical fire at a jewelry manufacturer in Cranston injured at least 14 firefighters Monday evening
Shortly after 4:30 p.m., firefighters from Cranston and surrounding communities responded to 1420 Elmwood Ave. for a report of a fire in a chemical room at Gem-Craft Inc.
"9/11 -- (that's what) this looks like. Every city around here seems to be represented," an employee said NBC 10 News at the scene.
Upon arrival, fire was coming from a room that houses a variety of chemicals.
At least one firefighter was taken out on a stretcher and put in an ambulance.
However, the fire chief said they all suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
The hazardous materials crew was called to the scene, along with a decontamination unit.
Meanwhile, the chief said crews headed back into the building just after 6:30 p.m. to evaluate the situation.
While the chief said they found "a multitude of chemicals," he did not disclose what directly caused the fire.
Gem-Craft is a family-owned business founded in the mid-1960s.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
