Blind woman fixes jewelry for friends, neighbors - Hawaii News Now
TOPEKA, KS (KSNT/CNN) - Donna Low was born partially blind and has had 17 eye operations. She can only see out of one eye.
Yet, at 69 years old, she fixes jewelry for her neighbors at her retirement home.
With each piece she fixes or creates, Low makes her customers happy and surprises herself.
"To see their smile, and just feel the exuberance emanating from them, 'I haven't been able to wear that in 30 years!' " Low said. "And now they can wear it again. This is why I do not charge. I do not believe in that, I'm not in this to make money."
Low said this isn't just a job, it’s a way of proving to herself and others she can do it.
"You just make the best of what you have and I didn't know what vision was," Low said.
Examining the jewelry Low’s fixed or created, you would never guess she's limited in her ability to see.
It's a wonder she finds the imagination to make some of her masterpieces.
"I've put beads on to handles of salad tossers, I've taken salad forks and bent the tongs up and made bracelets," Low said.
She's found her niche and another reason to celebrate life.
