Jewelry Designer Mignonne Gavigan On The 9 Chicest Accessory Trends This Fall - Forbes

If you’re not in the mood to go on a shopping spree to freshen up your closet for fall, there’s an easier way to give a sartorial welcome to the new season: switching up your accessories. “As everybody heads into fall, they are ready for a reset,” says Mignonne Gavigan, Founder and Creative Director of her eponymous jewelry line. “When the weather starts changing, you want to get cozy in your sweater and wear layers again and find what’s your new color story for fall. As you’re wearing more sweaters and pants, it’s time to let an amazing statement necklace do its work. Wearing layers, it’s almost easier to throw on a pair of earrings or a scarf. We have scarf necklaces that are warmer but are decorative pieces as well.” Gavigan shares the nine chicest jewelry trends to wear this fall.

Owls. Every season has its critter. While flamingos stole the show for summer, this fall is all about owls. “Today there is so much opportunity for people to express themselves through what they’re wearing and owls are an example of that,” Gavigan says. “People love and relate to them. We have white owl earrings that can transition you from jeans and T-shirts in early fall into sweater and boots weather. The detail on the head with beading and threadwork, plus the feathers with brown and white tips, makes them very tactile. There’s so much detail and they’re only two inches long.”

Headbands. “People are wearing headbands again,” Gavigan says. “The appeal is to give you an elevated way to update your hairstyle without getting it cut or colored. Throwing on that headband is a fun quick fix. It’s totally making a comeback.”

Texture. Playing with texture is big. “Across the board we are seeing a lot of metal, sequins, enamel pieces, beads and feathers,” Gavigan says. “Our Sara necklace is made out of metal bugle beads and it looks like liquid the way that it moves and the way the light shines off of it because of the metal beading. It’s a unique and different way to use a metal bead, laying it so that it ombrés from one color to the next.”

Playing with color. “When I first started in fashion, you could only really wear black,” Gavigan says. “Now people can use color to transition from the kind of things they’re wearing into what they want to be wearing.” Gavigan recommends wearing mauves, pinks, beiges, brown, gold and even pops of teal to work your way through autumn. Bright reds and dark browns are great for late fall.

Bangles. “Bangles are definitely here to stay,” Gavigan says. Whether you opt for simple or ornate, stack your bracelets to create an arm party.

Negative space. “Looking at it as a spectator, the negative space on our Nonna necklace creates with the patterns it makes with the materials woven in is very cool,” Gavigan says. “Wearing it with white or gray sweater or black long-sleeved T-shirt gives you a completely different look. That play on the visuals and what you’re wearing gives you the opportunity to wear it so many different ways.”

Lightening bolts. “We’re behind lightning bolts in a big way,” Gavigan says. “They are literally flying off the shelves. What’s cool about them is they frame the face really well.”

Statement earrings. “I definitely think big statement earrings aren’t going anywhere,” Gavigan says. “It’s almost like its own category these days. Some customers mix minimalist with statement jewelry.” Work the asymmetrical trend by wearing a showstopper in one ear and a plain earring in the other ear.

Eastern European motifs. “There’s a lot of tradition in these kinds of prints, patterns and beading details,” Gavigan says. “Those styles really take off.
