DECATUR — Jewelry valued at more than $5,000 was stolen from a Decatur woman’s home, police said.

Detective Sgt. Christopher Copeland said the 68-year-old woman reported several pairs of gold rings and gold earrings, inset with diamonds and other precious stones, had been taken. Copeland said the woman last remembered seeing the jewelry Aug. 1, and the theft happened between then and Monday, when it was reported.

“She has suspicions about who took it, and we ended up talking to that person who denied everything,” Copeland said.

Copeland said it was a good idea for owners of valuables like jewelry to keep a picture record of their items. He said such pictures made it easier for detectives to trace stolen jewelry.
