Old jewelry could be hidden gem worth big bucks - WFLA

CLEARWATER, Fla. (WFLA) - We all have old jewelry of sentimental value, but it can be hard to tell what it's really worth without knowing what to look for.

The experts at the Gold and Diamond Source say one of the best ways to see if jewelry is real or fake is with a magnet.

Phony pieces will cling on, while authentic pieces will go undetected.

Another way the family-owned shop tests your old pieces is by scraping the gold onto a stone.

"By putting this acid on the line you should see it resists 14 karat gold so you must know it’s 14 karat or higher," gemologist Adam Johnson-Weintraub said.

Some items you have laying around your house could be worth a lot more than thought.

"Sterling silver flatware, Rolex watches, like old wedding rings, just any kind of pieces that could be laying around in sometimes jewelry box," owner Julie Weintraub said.

One person's trash could be another's treasure so you better dig out that chest of hidden gems for a free appraisal at the Gold and Diamond Source.
