Here’s the rundown: a family-run jewelry store in Castle Hills is closing, and a new pet store and bakery cafe are among the new spots opening in the area.
Peñaloza & Sons, a jewelry business at 2001 NW Military Highway, is closing because the owners are retiring. Charles Peñaloza, the son of a Mexican immigrant from Yucatán, started the business in 1958. His sons Paul and Phillip Peñaloza took over after their father’s death in 2002.

The family has made jewelry for celebrities such as Carol Burnett, Debbie Reynolds and Bob Hope.
“It makes you feel a little old when you're selling something to a grandchild when you sold the original wedding set to the grandparents,” Paul Peñaloza said in a statement. “But it makes you feel good inside — those long-standing relationships we have established through the years.”
Going-out-of-business sales start Friday.
PetSmart is holding a grand opening at 9 a.m. Saturday for its new San Antonio store, located at 415 W. Loop 1604 S., Suite 119. It carries various pet products, offers training and adoption services and has a grooming salon.
Hearthstone Bakery Cafe is opening in the former Crumpets Restaurants and Bakery space Wednesday, staff writer Chuck Blount reports. Hearthstone bought the property on Harry Wurzbach Road inside Loop 410 in September.
The LEGOLAND Discovery Center opens next week at the Shops at Rivercenter mall. The center includes play zones, rides, a cinema and an enormous LEGO display with replicas of the city’s landmarks.

QuikTrip is opening its 800th store Saturday. There will be activities and prizes at the grand opening event at 8850 Culebra Rd., according to a Facebook event.
A new weight loss center, Burn It In 30, is also hosting a grand opening Saturday. The event at 15814 University Oak, Suite 113, starts at 1 P.M., a Facebook event notes.
Signet Jewelers, which owns Kay Jewelers, Jared The Galleria of Jewelry and Zales, plans to close more than 150 stores in fiscal year 2020, it announced this week. Last year, Signet shuttered 262 stores.
The company expects to open 20 to 25 stores in 2020. It’s unclear whether any of the stores that will be opening or closing are in San Antonio. A spokesperson for Signet said the company does not provide a list of openings and closings.
Target announced this week it is raising its minimum wage to $13 an hour in June, up from $12 an hour last year. In 2017, the company said it planned to increase the hourly wage to $15 an hour in 2020.
Another round of price cuts took effect at Whole Foods Market this week. The reduction applies to hundreds of items, including produce, Amazon and Whole Foods said in a statement.
Northern Tool + Equipment is opening a new San Antonio location May 2. The 20,000-square-foot store, which carries an assortment of tools and parts, will be located at 2834 Goliad Road.
A distillery and brewery is set to open soon at the Lockwood Bank building at 115 Broadway, staff writer Paul Stephen reports. Maverick Whiskey will also serve as a museum to the Maverick family and San Antonio history.
