Burglars target jewelry, cash in home break-in: Westlake Police Blotter - cleveland.com

WESTLAKE, Ohio

Home burglary, Hilliard Boulevard

A resident returned home at about 12:15 a.m. June 30 to find that their house had been ransacked. There were signs of forced entry. The burglars appeared to be seeking jewelry and cash, according to police. The family was taking an inventory of missing items.

Suspicious solicitors, Bradley Road

A resident called police June 28 to report that two men had come to his home and asked his wife if she wanted the driveway redone with asphalt that was left over from another job. They claimed they were offering a discount because they had the “leftover” materials.

The wife refused, and a white pickup truck carrying the two men drove away southbound on Bradley. Officers checked the area, but were unable to locate the people.

Police advise residents that if a deal seems too good to be true, it almost always is. Residents should be wary of unsolicited, in-person offers for home or yard repairs. They advise residents to call the Westlake Police Department or the Better Business Bureau with questions.

Impaired driving, Center Ridge Road

A Westlake police officer at 10:30 p.m. June 29 noticed an SUV that had driven up on the curb on Center Ridge at Dover Center Road in a construction zone.

The male driver stepped out of the vehicle when the officer stopped, but left the SUV in reverse. However, the truck was stuck on the curb and did not roll away.

While the driver explained that he was going to the gas station to get more beer, the officer noticed that the 45-year-old Westlake man slurred his speech. After the officer administered a field test, he arrested the suspect for operating a vehicle while impaired.

The suspect has three prior OVI convictions and refused a breath test.

Possession of marijuana, Columbia Road

An officer at 1 p.m. July 2 stopped a car for a traffic violation as it entered Interstate 90 eastbound.

Police learned that the man driving the car had a suspended license. While the officer was dealing with the first car, a second car, which had been following the first car, stopped. The officer learned that the driver of the second car, who was the mother of the driver of the first car, also had a suspended license.

The second car also contained a passenger who was the owner of the first car. She admitted that she had allowed the man to drive her car even though she knew he did not have a valid driver’s license, which resulted in her receiving a citation for wrongful entrustment.

As the officer was writing citations for the suspects, the officer spotted suspected marijuana in the first car. He then added a possession of marijuana charge against the 32-year-old Cleveland man who had been driving the first car.

All three suspects were released with citations, but one of the cars was towed from the scene because there was only one licensed driver among the occupants of the two cars.

Shoplifting, Crocker Park

Police responded at 5:30 p.m. July 2 to Crocker Park for suspected shoplifters. Multiple stores reported that two teenaged girls were taking items without paying.

Police stopped the girls’ vehicle from leaving the shopping center. The teenagers had merchandise from six stores. Police turned over four 16-year-old Lakewood girls to their parents. They will be charged through juvenile court with receiving stolen property, according to police.

Disorderly celebrant, Clague Park

Officers received complaints at 9 p.m. July 4 about a woman who was creating a scene during Independence Day events at Clague Park.

The woman appeared to be intoxicated and was yelling at the crowd around her. She was accused of pushing another person. Even after officers arrived, the woman continued yelling and swearing at the crowd.

Police arrested her for disorderly conduct while intoxicated and failure to identify herself, as she refused to cooperate with the investigation. On her way to jail, she asked the officers if they were proud of arresting “a mother,” and she said she would make this into a national incident.

The 47-year-old Westlake resident was later released to a sober person.
