Lowe's jewelry inspired by waves of the ocean - The Daily Advance
Inspired by the waves of the ocean, Bettie Gard Lowe creates silver, copper and enamel jewelry.
A middle school teacher for 40 years, Lowe said she discovered an interest in the craft after she retired.
“I learned silversmithing in 2001, but I just did it for myself and my family,” said Lowe.
Lowe said her first jewelry creation was a pair of earrings in a hollow form technique.
In 2012, Lowe began taking jewelry classes at the College of the Albemarle in Manteo.
“When we are in jewelry classes everybody has a distinct style,” said Lowe.
Lowe chooses to design silver that has a “shiny” surface.
Originally from Elizabeth City, Lowe’s fondness for the sea is reflected in her jewelry.
“I make a lot of things related to the beach,” said Lowe. "Last year my theme was waves."
Lowe said she also finds inspiration from photographs in magazines to design earrings, rings, necklaces and bracelets.
“I am doing more enameling this year and experimenting with colors,” said Lowe. “I love bright colors.”
This season Lowe said she has a preference for blues, yellows and a raspberry hue.
Lowe will display her work at the 58th Albemarle Craftsman’s Fair on Oct. 28-30 at Knobbs Creek Recreation Center.
Lowe said demonstrating her craft at the Albemarle Craftsman’s Fair is similar to teaching.
“I really enjoy meeting the people, and having them ask questions,” said Lowe.
“I am not complicated, so my jewelry is not complicated,” said Lowe. “It is simple, something you can wear everyday.”
Lowe said her pieces have been on display at the Arts of the Albemarle and the Dare County Arts Council.
Lowe enjoys spending time with her two sons and four grandchildren.
