Thief steals $2,000 worth of jewelry from West Ashley pawnshop ... - Charleston Post Courier

Deputies say someone broke into a West Ashley pawnshop and stole $2,000 worth of jewelry while the Lowcountry dealt with the impacts of Tropical Storm Irma.

The burglary was reported at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Lowcountry Pawn and Jewelry, 1738 Ashley River Road. The business is at the intersection with Wappoo Road.

Maj. Eric Watson, a Charleston County Sheriff's Office spokesman, said a concerned citizen reported seeing a man wearing all black running from the front door of the business.

Deputies said the front door and two glass jewelry cases were broken. They recovered some of the jewelry where the suspect dropped it near the business.

Deputies tried to search for the suspect using a K-9 but the search was called off due to weather conditions. No arrests have been made.

Other tri-county law enforcement agencies say they have not fielded reports of burglaries to homes or businesses during Irma. Charleston Police Interim Chief Jerome Taylor at a press conference Tuesday said there was "no major crime" during the duration of the storm.

Anyone with information about the burglary at Lowcountry Pawn and Jewelry is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 843-554-1111.
