Shelton dog sitter accused of stealing jewelry from Westport home - CTPost
WESTPORT - A Shelton woman, who worked as a dog sitter in a Westport home, has been accused of stealing $23,750 worth of jewelry and trying to sell it.
Jill Campoli, 45, was arrested Wednesday and charged with first-degree larceny.
According to Westport police, on April 1, 2019, a member of the detective bureau was contacted by a citizen who had seen a news release related to the arrest of Campoli for the charge of larceny in second degree.
“In that case, Campoli had been arrested for stealing jewelry and flatware from a victim who had employed Campoli for dog sitting and grooming,” police said in a release.
“These stolen items were then sold to a local pawn business by Campoli. The caller reported that she had employed Campoli in the same capacity from approximately the year 2007 to the year 2018, at which time Campoli at times had full unsupervised access to her residence.
“Seeing this news release prompted her to do a more thorough search of her home for a particular necklace that she had been looking for during the several months prior. She was unsuccessful in locating the item, prompting her call to police.
“The victim was shown several photographs of items sold at pawn by Campoli. The victim was able to positively identify the missing necklace as well as several other pieces of jewelry that belonged to her as items that had been sold by Campoli.
“In addition, the victim located a photo posted on the internet by Campoli in which she appears to be wearing the missing necklace.
“The total value of stolen items was determined to be $23,750.
“Campoli was interviewed and claimed that a friend who had assisted her with her business had stolen the items and that she merely had sold them for her. That individual was contacted and interviewed. She denied that allegation, stating that she was aware that Campoli had been selling jewelry, but was told that it had belonged to an ex-fiancé.
Based on the investigation, an arrest warrant was applied for and granted charging Campoli with first-degree larceny.
On Wednesday, Campoli turned herself in at police headquarters.
Campoli was unable to post the bond and was transported to Norwalk Superior Court on Wednesday for arraignment and then given another court date.
