Police say cleaning lady pawned $14K in jewelry taken from home - WREG NewsChannel 3
Rita Black says she hired a service to clean her home on Southwood, in East Memphis. Two employees of the service came and cleaned her home for about an hour on the morning of June 20, she said.
But after they left, the woman says she went to get her jewelry out of a drawer in the living room and noticed it missing.
"On a Sunday morning when I was getting ready to go to church, I was getting some jewelry out and it wasn't there," Black said. "So I called the police."
Police say on June 23, one of those women took the rings, earrings and a necklace to Reliable Pawn on Summer Avenue and pawned them.
Vicki Walker is charged with theft of property, $10,000-$60,000.
The most important piece to Black is still missing: Her grandmother's ring, a 50th wedding anniversary gift.
"Everything else I got back but that was the most important piece," Black said, "I had wanted to hand that to my oldest grandson to give to his betrothed someday."
She's holding out hope that the ring is still out there, somewhere.
