No Refund Policy: Jewelry Store's Response to Couple Buyer's Remorse - KRGV
HARLINGEN - A Rio Grande Valley couple wants the reimbursement of two extravagant wedding rings they bought at a local jewelry store.
However, the jewelry store’s policy states they don’t do cash refunds, only store credit.
Pamela and George Maldonado were married 15 years ago. They said they decided to do something special for each other.
“We just decided to renew our vows and get some nice rings. We went to Portillo and we saw some nice rings,” they said.
Pamela Maldonado said her husband put a deposit down at the Harlingen store and later paid for the rings. They said they spent thousands of dollars on them.
Two weeks later, Pamela said she returned to the store because she had buyer’s remorse.
“I went back to the store and asked if I could get something a little bit more down to earth,” she said.
The Maldonado’s said there wasn’t anything wrong with the rings. Pamela said they weren’t a match for her personality. But they both said they didn’t study the refund policy for the jewelry store.
Portillo Jewelry Owner Ricardo Portillo showed us the store’s policy signs and reprinted the receipts from the Maldonado’s transaction, which shows the policy.
However, Portillo said he is willing to work with the couple.
“The store policy remains we cannot refund, but there isn’t anything stating that we cannot negotiate with him to get what they can get for the full amount,” he said.
Pamela Maldonado said she’s undecided. She said they may go to small claims instead and admitted her husband usually goes overboard with special gifts.
Maldonado recommends people should read a store’s policy on returns and exchanges before they make any purchase.
